Satisfied smile

Amidst rushing to obtain work permit from mall management, I dragged Kuan- the plumber to trouble-shoot some minor issues at a house we refurbished 2 years ago; an impromptu job for Kuan.

Few tenants came and gone, and it's now tenanted by Tina, her younger brother, 2 friends and a cute and friendly baby girl. The house was barely furnished, not much different from what we've done- basic refurbish and replacing wear & tears for a >25 year old house; it is the owner's decision anyway.

The relatively higher rental whilst too-basic furnishing brushed-off many potential tenants, although it's really convenient place to stay in, and it's widely known as upper market location- walking distance to Bangsar Village 2. However, Tina and co decided to stay in, with basic expectation; contrary to the majority's aim including yours truly, great things at super bargain- how often could we come across? At least, one party has to give way somewhere; and in this case, landlord got what they wanted- both good rental at basic furnishing. I heard Tina's boss subsidized 50% of the rental, yet, compared to normal foreign workers, the rental still seem high.

Tina was having lunch when we arrived. Greeted us, she showed us the problem she's been facing and Kuan immediately diagnosed and started working.

"Bro, have a drink, it's Coke" Tina's brother offered, passing over the chilled glass from his room. I thanked him; wasn't thirsty and didn't ask for it though.

Providing workable condition of fittings, as basic as sanitaryware- tap & shower head are landlords duty to tenant, but that doesn't mean they must use second fiddle items right? "Can i buy a better one and you help me fix it?" Tina suggest for an exchange of better and more solid material at own expense; instead of using the old and a lil weary item 'designated' to them originally ('unfortunately' not by us).

Kuan had a suitable set, used; quoted her RM18. I told her to pay Kuan RM15 will do; to my surprise (as off usual people who will do otherwise), she said she's happy with the option given and will pay RM20. We all chuckled. The original-designated pipe and tap was too high to be reached, Kuan understands, and voluntarily amended it, to a more friendly height.

Subsequently, we helped solved few more items. Kuan was offered a chilled green carbonated juice after helping to change the final lockset. They checked all items before sending us off, another round of iced water with smile- thank you.

I found out she paid Kuan RM20 (the thing I asked her to pay RM15) and subsequently handed over RM10 as tip. My heart sank. I knew it was sincere, but asked Kuan to reject it (afterall, Kuan been paid additionally by landlord for his trouble-shooting service); hope she understands why I did it. It's not primarily a matter of ego or RM10 tip or RM5 she paid extra for the used item;

i was touched.

- The way she welcomed us when we interrupted her lunch
- The way she accepted her living condition and quietly accept the defective item designated to her
- The way she's willing to upgrade a better material for the comfort of her 'family', at own expenses and no complaints
- The way she expressed gratitude with iced-drink served in nice glass; even we didn't ask for it
- The way she appreciated the better option given by paying more than being asked for (normally people would ask for a further and perceived-deserving discount)
- The way she politely smiled and yet, tipping us for the work we done; we knew the amount might cost 1/3 of her day pay, and could be substantial in her home currency. That shows how generous or contented (if generosity is linear to level of contentment) to us

Kuan & I, Tina & her housemates; smiled when we bid goodbye.

The 3-hours trip earned I.H.I zero monetarily; cost I.H.I time, opportunity and transportation cost; it is always good feeling to be treated with respect and being appreciated with solution rendered, especially a least-expected one.

I met another polite, humble yet satisfied customer today.
